This Month is Pride – a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ (this stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, and queer – the + is an inclusive symbol to include people of all identities) communities around the globe. The reason why Pride is celebrated in June is because this is when the Stonewall riots happened; protests in 1969 in the USA that ended up changing gay rights for not only Americans, but people all around the world too.
Pride month brings people together to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, but also to highlight the work that is still to be done. It’s a time for colourful parades, and other fun events like marches and concerts.
In this blog, we wanted to highlight 5 fantastic Pride events that are happening across the UK this month:
This takes place at Southampton Market all day and is the perfect place to pick up some merchandise if you’re planning to attend a Pride event! From flags, bags and clothing, you’ll be able to get all the bits you need and at £5 or less – what a bargain. A brilliant and fun way to explore London’s Queer hub, you’ll uncover 2,000 years of LGBTQ+ history! You’ll meet likeminded people, get outdoors and will be sure to learn something new. And the best thing? It’s totally FREE! Find out more.
Taking place at the BFI Southbank, this jukebox night celebrates 100 years of the brilliant Judy Garland – playing clips of some of the best-known hits from her career. Singing along is an essential part of the evening – so get practicing! – and dressing up is also strongly encouraged. Find out more about the event, here.
Essex Pride is a cornerstone event that showcases Essex’s celebrated approach to diversity and inclusion. It’s an event for the whole community to enjoy and is so much more than just a big party – it’s a place for people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate each other. More information.
Back for its 11th year, this is Salford’s annual LGBTQ+ Pride celebration. It takes place at Peel Park and brings local groups, organisations, and charities together to showcase Salford’s diverse communities.
